At My Exam Buddy, we believe every learner deserves a fair chance to succeed. Access arrangements are adjustments made for students with special educational needs, disabilities, or temporary injuries, ensuring exams measure their ability – not their barriers.
Access arrangements can include:
Extra time to complete an exam
Use of a reader or reading software
A scribe or speech recognition software
Rest breaks during exams
Modified exam papers (e.g., large print or coloured paper)
Smaller, quieter rooms to reduce anxiety
Although these arrangements do not change the exam itself, they can provide the right support so your child can show what they know and can do.
We work with qualified assessors and SEN professionals to ensure that learners are properly supported. We can guide you through the process of arranging assessments and applying for the right support.
We're working closely with Wiltshire SEN Assessment for Learning to ensure that no learner is disadvantaged when sitting their exams.
Access arrangements are available for learners who have a diagnosed or evidenced need, such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism, anxiety, or physical difficulties. Schools, colleges, and exam centres must follow JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) regulations when applying for these.
Although the content of the exam remains the same, the arrangements level the playing field. This will help your child show what they know without unnecessary barriers.
Toria Thomas is a Level 7 Dyslexia Assessor, Level 7 Special Learning Difficulties Teacher with 20 years experience of teaching in a mainstream setting, alongside 8 years of experience as a SENCO (and much more!).
Access arrangement assessments are offered in Corsham and Trowbridge (The Bridge Examinations Hub). Visit Wiltshire SEN Assessment for Learning, or contact us for more information.
Does my child need a diagnosis?
Not always. Some arrangements are based on medical or specialist reports (e.g., dyslexia or ADHD), others can be made with evidence from teachers or support staff showing your child’s normal way of working.
Who pays for the assessment?
If your child is enrolled at a school, the school will usually cover this. For private candidates, an independent assessment may be required, we’ll always explain any costs upfront.
When should we apply?
As early as possible. Applications must follow JCQ deadlines, and late requests may not be accepted. We recommend starting the process well before your child’s exam season.
Do all students get the same arrangements?
No – arrangements are tailored to each learner’s needs. What works for one student may not be appropriate for another.
